New Haven Ballet Is Starting the Fall with a Challenge!

October 12, 2020

Dear New Haven Ballet Community,

It is fall in New England, the time of back to school, back to ballet class, and dance rehearsals. These things are happening, but all of them are changed: students are taking classes in masks or via Zoom and the dance rehearsals are for programs whose audience will not be in the theater. These are hard times, and in the words of the poet Alice Walker, “Hard times require furious dancing.”

New Haven Ballet (NHB) is furiously dancing. Our studios are deep-cleaned and our students masked and distanced; some of our “studios” are living rooms and bedrooms. But our company is rehearsing for performances to be offered on YouTube or, as the situation changes, live. Our first post-COVID dance video of the Corelli Adagio, performed with the Videri String Quartet, is available on YouTube, and more are under way.

Meanwhile, our Shared Ability  program for differently abled dancers is also under way, changed to meet our changed circumstances, and we are actively pursuing a means by which we can once more offer our DanceAir program, in which second graders in the New Haven public schools receive ballet training from our superlative staff and children from each participating school win full scholarships to NHB.

Fall is also the time we launch our annual fund appeal, and this year our needs, too, have changed: now in addition to our stellar staff and programs, we need funds for relentless deep studio cleaning, for the technology to share our performances, and for tuition assistance for our many families in need.

In the midst of all these changes, one thing remains the same:  NHB’s commitment to our mission “to provide the greater New Haven Community with exceptional classical ballet training, performances, and outreach programs that nurture appreciation of ballet and foster the joy of dance.” For 35 years we have actively sought a wide and diverse student body, working with public schools and other organizations. No child is left behind: we provide needs-based scholarships to students throughout Greater New Haven.

These programs and initiatives cost money—money that does not come from tuition alone. If you are able to make a donation, won’t you please help us help you and our community? A donation of any amount will help us maintain our faculty and staff, offer studio and Zoom-based classes, give our company chances to perform, and reach out to the Greater New Haven community. The joy that dance can bring into our lives has not changed, and with your help we can share that joy together. Thank you.NHB is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and all donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Wishing you safety and health.

Yours sincerely with gratitude,

Lisa Kim Sanborn, Artistic Director

Megan Murphy, Board President
