Open Division (Ages 12+)

New Haven Ballet offers recreational classes on a drop-in basis for students 12+ years old and older.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional, New Haven Ballet has something for everyone. Open Division classes for teens and adults provide an incredible dance experience, allowing students to participate in professional quality ballet technique classes on a drop-in basis. Modern dance and introduction to pointe classes are also available.

BEGINNING BALLET

Beginning ballet introduces the fundamentals of classical ballet to students with little to no experience. The class includes explanations of the basic positions, steps, and movements. It begins at the barre and includes center work. Students who have completed a year of beginning ballet may choose to move up to intermediate ballet.

INTERMEDIATE BALLET

Ruth Barker’s ballet class is recommended for students with at least two years of classical ballet training. If you love the joy of moving to music and the strength and beauty of ballet, this class is for you! The class is 90 minutes long and consists of barre and center work.

INTRODUCTION TO POINTE

The Friday 11:30 a.m. introduction to pointe class is a significant step in your ballet journey, designed for students with at least two years of ballet training. It’s a class where your physical strength and technical readiness are crucial. To ensure you’re fully prepared and confident for the pointe class, you must participate in the beginning ballet class, which proceeds this class on Fridays from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

MODERN DANCE

Laurel Lynch’s modern class focuses on rhythmic and qualitative specificity while exploring the body’s full range of movement and healthy, anatomically based alignment. She encourages dancers to expand their dance vocabulary, take risks, and always remember the joy of moving to music.
